Tian Huang Shi Crouching Tiger, carved by Yang Yuxuan in the Qing Dynasty, is 3.6 cm high, 6.7 cm long and 3.5 cm wide
The tiger is carved with tian huang stone. It is crouching, bowing and looking forward. It seems to be ready to go. A thin black line around the body represents hair. Behind the ear and near the back, there are two characters of “Yuxuan” in the printed script
Tianhuang is a kind of Shoushan stone, which is produced in paddy field and is yellow, so it is named. Citrus yellow and golden yellow are the best, followed by loquat yellow and osmanthus yellow. Tianhuang, Furong Stone and Chicken Blood Stone are known as China’s “three major stone seals”. Yang Yuxuan was a famous craftsman in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty. He was good at carving Shoushan stone, and was skilled in cutting. During the reign of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty, he worked in the Qing Palace Building Office.
