Emperor Xuanye of Kangxi received systematic Chinese culture education from his childhood, had a strong sense of identity with the traditional Chinese culture, was eager to learn, and had a great interest in calligraphy. In my spare time, I watched the ancient Chinese ink with my subordinates, and exchanged calligraphy skills to cultivate my feelings with calligraphy. Among the calligraphers of the past dynasties, Xuan Ye most admired Dong Qichang. He deliberately imitated Dong’s calligraphy and became an outstanding calligrapher of the Dong School. He directly influenced and led the trend of the calligraphy style at that time, making the calligraphy world of the early Qing Dynasty permeated with the charm of the Dong School
The outer signature of this piece is “The Tenth Poem of Ji Dong Nanyuan Written by Emperor Shengzu”. This book is five out of five, and the title is “The Tenth Poem of Ji Dong Nanyuan”, and the seal is “Kangxi Chenhan” and “Jigu Youwen”
Xuan Ye praises Dong Qichang, and most of his handed down calligraphic works are based on learning Dong characters. He copied it deliberately under the instruction of Shen Quan, making Dong characters popular in the public.
