The Painting of Purple Lantern Hall was originally painted by Zhao Mengfu. Qian Du had seen the authentic work in the capital, and then it was completed by his friend Mr. Yue Qiao. According to the description of the picture, we can see that the picture was made in the 24th year of Jiaqing (1819) of the Qing Dynasty, and the author was 56 years old. More than 20 years later (the 22nd year of Daoguang’s reign, 1842), this picture was obtained by the master of Mei Yu, and Qian Du was asked to write a new title on the picture
The picture of the Purple Langxian Pavilion has a quiet and desolate artistic conception and a comfortable atmosphere, which shows the ideal life of a scholar living in seclusion. By describing the elegant and quiet living environment of the literati, the author reflects their life ideal and moral sentiment. Although this picture is derived from Zhao’s original work, it is characterized by the meticulous and neat pen, the subtle characters and buildings, and the elegance of the ancient and clumsy, which is the characteristic of Qian’s family. Its composition form and coloring have the characteristics of Wumen painting school, especially the influence of Wen Zhengming’s “fine brush” painting method.
