The self-title of this picture: “Shu Ming’s Jiufeng Reading Map is collected by Qian Zongbo, and I have to borrow it for the rest of the time. Now I copy its pen meaning and present it to Zhong Weng’s Laozongtai Sect for correction. My ugly brother Ji Xia’s book.” Seal “Xuan Zhao” and “Yanbo Fisherman” Bai Wenyin. There are three seals in the collection: “private seal of Zhu Rong”, white seal, “famous painting record of Zhangyishen Hall”, Zhu seal, etc
“Self ugly” is the sixth year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1649), and the author was 52 years old
The picture shows the mountains, pines and streams, and a senior scholar reading in a cottage. The subtle manner of the chant in the exhibition volume highlights the creative theme of “reading” and embodies the artist’s hermit thought. The composition of this painting is based on the high and distant method. The pine at the foot of the mountain is carefully depicted with neat lines, showing the author’s ability to shape with lines. At the top of the mountain, there are thick ink spots, such as muddy spots, broken bamboo spots, pepper spots, broken ink spots, and so on. The flexible and varied point methods enhance the moist, lush and beautiful weather of the mountains in the south of the Yangtze River. The vein of the mountains and rocks is represented by Wang Shuming (that is, Wang Meng) of the Yuan Dynasty, who is typical of the untwisted texture. Its ink drags down, and the lines with dense buckling are consistent with the steep trend of the mountains and rocks, which enhances the majestic momentum of the mountains. This picture can be regarded as a masterpiece of Wang Jianming imitating Wang Shuming, which comprehensively shows his skillful use of Wang Meng’s painting techniques.
