Black-painted gold-painted pavilion pot

[Black paint painted with gold landscape pavilions]

Black paint painted with gold landscape pavilions, Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng, height 12.8 cm, belly diameter 7.4 cm, bottom diameter 3.8 cm
The pot has a straight mouth, a short neck, a rolling shoulder, a duck egg-shaped belly, a flat bottom, a phoenix shaped beaker at the shoulder and the middle of the belly, and a small stream at the opposite side of the beaker. It can be inferred from the openwork of the phoenix’s eyes that this pot should have a small cover connected with the pot. The whole body is painted with black paint and gold painting technique. The main body of the abdomen is decorated with stone pavilions. On the right side of one side, there are five birds in a row flying freely in the air following the one in front of the left, and on the right side of the other side, there are two flying birds. The whole pattern seems to express the wonderful poetic meaning of “two orioles singing in the green willows, and a row of egrets rising in the blue sky”. The stones and terraces are piled up with paint ash, carved and painted with gold, which makes the overall design have a sense of hierarchy. The “Painting Record” refers to this technique as “hidden painting of gold”
According to the records of the building office of the Hall of Nourishing the Heart, in the third year of Yongzheng’s reign, Prince Yi sent the emperor an order to make a pair of enamel pots according to the pattern of foreign lacquer duck eggs. A pair of copper enamel duck egg pots were made on October 29. Message: But the pattern is not good. Foreign lacquer is often mentioned in the archives of the Yongzheng Office. Some are made in Japan and some are imitated in the Qing Dynasty. The stone surface of the pot is sprinkled with gold filings, which is obviously Japanese lacquer style. We can at least regard it as a work strongly influenced by the Japanese lacquer technology
Since the Tang and Song Dynasties, literature and art have all been applied to the daily life of the civilian society. The traditional Chinese Confucian ideology teaches people to cultivate their moral integrity, maintain the family, govern the country, and level the world. Under the influence of this ethical concept, the craft works contain deep poetic and pictorial meanings, deep moral lessons and cultural spirit, so that the viewers have the opportunity to get close to nature at any time, and have the landscape wind and cloud to clean their minds at any time. Since the middle of the Ming Dynasty, with the prosperity of commerce and the development of urban consumption, people’s natural desire has gradually been recognized, affirmed and emphasized. Scholars and doctors have advocated to take personality as the core, and in the aspect of aesthetic taste, they openly advocate and pursue vulgar, gorgeous, strange, dangerous, clever and other styles. The poetic picture of Du Fu depicted by this holding pot can give Emperor Yongzheng spiritual comfort. The black paint painting technique used to depict gold foil the dazzling and luxurious visual effect, which is completely consistent with the aesthetic characteristics at that time
