[Lang Shining’s Flowers and Birds Atlas]
The Flowers and Birds Atlas, in the Qing Dynasty, is painted by Lang Shining, in silk, in color, with a total of ten openings, each of which is 32.6 cm in length and 28.6 cm in width
The signature of the paragraph: “I admire Lang Shining’s painting”, with the seal of “Lang Shining” Zhu Wen and the seal of “sketching” Bai Wen. Each opening has the seal of “Lang Shining” and “sketching”. The Jianzang Seal is printed with: “Reading Secretary of Leshou Hall”, “Guxi Tianzi”, “Treasure of Emperor Qianlong”, “Treasure of Eight Symbols and Eight Concepts”, “Treasure of Emperor Jiaqing”, “Treasure of Mind Cultivation Hall”, etc. Every time there was an inscription by Liang Shizheng, the cabinet minister of the Qianlong Dynasty.
This atlas depicts colorful flowers such as peony, orchid, poppy, day lily, lotus, plum, and lively butterflies and birds. The composition is based on the pattern of traditional Chinese flower and bird painting, with the emphasis on highlighting the painted objects. In terms of performance techniques, it fully displays the characteristics of European painting that pays attention to light, shade and perspective. With exquisite brushwork, it depicts the texture and volume of petals, leaves and feathers of birds, presenting a very different artistic style from traditional Chinese flower-and-bird painting. This “Chinese and Western combination” painting style became a major feature of the court painting art in the Qing Dynasty, and was favored by the Qing royal family
