This painting depicts the scene of six unrestrained horses resting on the bank of the stream in the fluffy season of weeping willows. Shen Zhenlin was an important court painter of horses in the Xianfeng, Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, but his horse painting techniques could not be compared with those of the Western court painters Lang Shining, Ai Qimeng and Wang Zhicheng who were good at painting horses in the Qianlong Dynasty. The author uses thin, strong and slightly sluggish lines to draw the horse’s body and bones, and the dynamics are slightly stiff and lack of vitality. It can be seen from the title of “minister Shen Zhenlin Gonghua” and the seal of “minister” that this picture was painted by Shen Zhenlin for the royal family of the Qing Dynasty. Therefore, he is also meticulous about the creation of the scenery. The willow leaves of weeping willows and the reeds in the shallow creek and the reeds in the shallow creek in the picture are very finely painted, with clear strokes and overlapping layers, which shows their good intentions
