This painting is self-awareness: “The bottom of the pen is full of dragons and snakes. Who can make a living alone in the world. Pines are covered with verdant trees, and vines grow more and more beautiful as they climb. In October of the eighth year of Yongzheng’s reign, Li Xuan wrote.” Seal “Li Xuan” and “Fu Tang”
In 1730, the eighth year of Yongzheng’s reign, Li Xuan was 45 years old. In August of that year, he was given a second chance to enter the court. However, he did not blindly imitate the ancients and engage in neat and rigorous painting to please the rulers. Instead, he painted freehand with his own painting ideal. In October, he created this picture of Pine Rattan. In the picture, the old pine trunk is twined with Chu color vines. The composition is exquisite, the color is simple and elegant, the pen is vigorous, the ink is dripping, and the color is random, but it is not messy, and it has a sense of integrity. Especially good at using water. The picture is as wet and fresh as when it was just finished. It is the representative work of Li Yu’s freehand brushwork, reflecting his style of painting with expressing his temperament as his personality
