[Copper gold-plated disk sun-moon star dial]

Copper gold-plated disk sun-moon star dial, clear, 18 cm high, 13.7 cm diameter, made in Cologne, Germany. The old collection of the Qing Palace
This instrument combines the sundial, the moon dial and the star dial, and calculates the time by measuring the corresponding scales of the sun, the moon and the star
One side of the instrument is a sundial, on which the solar term line, time line, northern latitude, and the zodiac are carved, and there are vertical ears, vertical watches, and pendants attached. On the other side of the instrument is the lunar dial, which is composed of three overlapping plates. The first plate is the zodiac and its degree table, the second plate is the date and time table, and the third plate is the straight table of the moon figure. There is a hole in the center of the plate, which can be used to check the moon phase diagram carved on the chassis. The star dial is at the outer end of the moon dial
The instrument is engraved with the Latin word “COLON” and the Roman word “1541”. This instrument may have been brought into the palace by Johann Adam Schall Von Bell, a missionary who came to China in the late Ming Dynasty. Tang Ruowang was born in Cologne
