The title on the top left of this picture reads: “Nanjun has defeated Wang Liangyu, and once you look at it, you should meet Bole Ming.” The seal on the bottom is “Huang Shen”, and the seal on the other side is indistinct
This picture depicts the story of Bole Xiangma. According to legend, Bole was born in the time of Duke Mu of Qin. His surname was Sun Mingyang, and he was good at looking after horses. Tang Hanyu’s “Miscellaneous” said: “There is Bole in the world, and then there is a thousand li horse. The thousand li horse often exists, but Bole does not often.” The title quoted Wang Liang’s driving example. Wang Liang was the coachman of the State of Zhao during the Warring States Period, and he drove faster than anyone else
The proportion of man and horse in this painting is harmonious, the lines are refined, and the trunk strokes are vigorous. The author conveys the ancient idiom story to the readers with accurate ink and vivid pictures.
