This is one of a set of thirteen pages. This picture depicts the portrait of Emperor Yongzheng, who was still the emperor’s son, wearing the clothes of a practitioner, carrying a wooden staff and carrying a futon
One of the important features of this set of Yongzheng Xingyue pictures is that the emperor wears strange clothes and has a variety of clothing categories. After the Manchus entered the customs, in order to prevent the rapid assimilation of the Manchus by the Han nationality, the Qing government explicitly banned the Manchus from wearing Han clothes, while the Emperor Yongzheng mostly wore Han clothes in the traveling pictures, dressed as village men, scholars, officials, etc. Not only that, Yongzheng also has music pictures of wearing Mongolian, Tibetan and Western clothing in the late Renaissance and Neoclassical period. Most of Yongzheng’s music pictures are comprehensive pictures of figure painting, portrait painting and landscape painting. The background painting is exquisite and realistic, from which you can also appreciate the style of palace landscape painting and portrait painting in Yongzheng period
“Joy painting” is a kind of Chinese figure painting, which is generally themed with depicting the entertainment life of the royal family. According to the records of Liang Taiqing Mu, the earliest painting description in China, “Xingle Tu” appeared as early as the Southern Qi Dynasty. Since then, “Xingle Tu” has gradually become a relatively common painting theme.
