[Rhinoceros carved bamboo and stone cup]
Rhinoceros carved bamboo and stone cup, clear, 10 cm high, 14.4 cm – 8.9 cm diameter, 5.6 cm – 4.6 cm foot diameter
The cup body is thick, open, astringent, with small bottom, clear outline and generous shape. The main body of the outer wall is decorated with numerous rocks in shallow relief, and the geometric shape is simplified. The effect is like sketching with a pen. Various short broken lines and irregular geometric blocks form complex graphic relationships, which is dazzling. In addition to the shallow relief, the high relief technique is used locally to enrich the changes of rock layers. At one end of the cup body, the rock wall with jagged holes is carved as a bamboo, and beside it is carved a bamboo rod that stretches diagonally, straight up to the edge of the mouth. The bamboo leaf pavilion is like a cover, hanging low to the inside and outside of the mouth, and embossed with several bamboo rods as a lining. The details are exquisite, and even the insect scars on the bamboo leaves are visible. The inner wall is also carved into rock-like texture, which echoes the decoration of the outer wall. Large-area carved stone patterns are rare in rhinoceros horn carving. The combination of bamboo and stone in this work absorbs the expression techniques of painting art. The meaning is elegant and the composition is complex and well controlled. It is undoubtedly a successful work of the same kind.
