Heron and road, lotus and lian are homophonic. Herons and lotus flowers symbolize “a series of courses along the way”, wishing the imperial examination and official career a smooth ride, which is one of the popular auspicious patterns in the Qing Dynasty, and is also common on porcelain. There are also Lusi and hibiscus, which means “prosperity along the way”, and Lusi and vase, which means “peace along the way”.
