[Ren Yi’s Flower and Bird Painting Fan Page]
The Flower and Bird Painting Fan Page, Qing Dynasty, Ren Yi’s painting, paper version, color setting, 17.8 cm vertically and 50.8 cm horizontally
There is a self-title on the fan page: “Brother Ruihua, you are right. Guangxu came to the moon in October, and Renyi Bonianfu wrote in Shanghai in Shanyin.” The seal is “Ren Bonian”
“Guiwei” is the ninth year of Guangxu’s reign in the Qing Dynasty (1883), when Ren Yi was 44 years old
As a representative painter of the “Shanghai School”, Ren Yi’s bookish style of literati painting is no longer his main goal. His goal is to show the aesthetic appreciation shared by literati and the people, thus forming a style that is both refined and popular, which can be seen from this picture. The flowers and birds in the picture are painted with boneless freehand brushwork. The ink is exquisite and free, and the color is mainly in the middle tone, which is easy to approach. The white peony in the picture, due to the poor quality of the white pigment, is oxidized and blackened, and most of it has fallen off, leaving only imprints. Its fading has become the regret of the fan
