[Wu Changshuo’s wisteria map axis]

The wisteria map axis, made by Wu Changshuo in the Qing Dynasty, is made of gold paper, colored, 163.4 cm vertically and 47.3 cm horizontally
This picture is painted by Wu Changshuo at the age of 62 in 1905. It is the last of the four flower screens. Paragraph: “On August 8, Yisi (1905), Anji Wu Junqing proposed the Thirteenth Peak Thatched Cottage”. Seal “Wu Junzhi”. The rattan leaves are painted in the air, like dragons and phoenix dancing. The cane twists and turns, and the stones are wrapped several times. The author skillfully uses the brushwork like wild grass, flying fast and finishing at one go. At the same time, this painting does not draw the shape but the air, and pursues the aesthetic interest of the air in calligraphy. As he said to himself, “The cursive script is the grape, and the pen moves the dragon”, and he also said, “When you touch the stone drum and the front brush, the play is a portrait of the orchid”, and so on. This style of painting with books as paintings has a profound impact on the creation of modern Chinese painting
In addition, the painting is thick, steady and incisive, and the composition is not restricted to the old method, but skillful in the layout. There is a lot of fun in the sprinkling, and the vivid brush and ink endow wisteria with vitality. The painting scene it shows fully confirms the poem of this inscription: “The flowers are hanging in purple jade, and the lines are tied with spring light. The flowers grow well, and float (float) all over the painting hall.”.
