“Wang Songzao in South Yunnan” Red Paper Society

[The corner square of the “King Songzao” Red Cross Society]

The corner square of the “King Songzao” Red Cross Society, in the middle of the Ming Dynasty, is 3.9 cm high, 25.5 cm in diameter and 19 cm in foot diameter. The old collection of the Qing Palace
There are more than 20 people in total, with square corners, various flowers carved on the wall, the center of the plate opening with the shape, and the inside of the plate carved with the palace courtyard, depicting feasts, paintings, pots and other cultural scenes. The building wall in the picture is carved with five words “Wang Songzao in South Yunnan”, which is the only known carved lacquer work carved with Wang Song’s style. The carving process, decorative patterns and floating cloud patterns of this plate are all in the middle of the Ming Dynasty
There are records of Yunnan people making carved lacquer in the literature. Gao Lian of the Ming Dynasty said in his “Yan Xianqing Appreciation Notes”: “Yunnan people take this as their career, but they are not good at hiding sharp edges with knives, and do not polish edges and corners. Although the carving method is fine, the paint is not strong…” Shen Defu also pointed out in the “Wanli Wild Collection”: “The most important thing to carve lacquer today is Song Cui, followed by Yongle and Xuande Orchard Factory of this dynasty, whose price is similar to that of Song Lie. There are those with dark lacquer light, and those with poor carving patterns, which are widely regarded as cheap.” These records illustrate the existence and characteristics of carved lacquer in Yunnan. In recent years, many researchers have identified a kind of Ming Dynasty carved lacquer with poor knife technique, sharp edges, poor paint quality, dark gloss and strong folk flavor as Yunnan products, but this carved lacquer plate knife marked with the style of “made by Wang Song of South Yunnan” belongs to the Tibetan Feng school, with fine carving and good paint quality. This plate is obviously different from the above statement, so this carved lacquer plate with style provides clues for us to study the carved lacquer of the Ming Dynasty, especially the style of carved lacquer in Yunnan. It is a material object of research value
