[Carved red double dragon peony round box]
Carved red double dragon peony round box, 7.4 cm high, 44.2 cm caliber. The old collection of the Qing Palace
The box has a flat cover, with a peony pattern on the cover, and two dragons are carved with their claws facing each other in the shape of playing beads. It has a strong sense of movement. The box wall is carved with flowers and dragon patterns. The bottom of the box is painted with black paint, which shows impetuosity. It is a rear bottom. It is tasteless. This box is exquisitely decorated and has a magnificent dragon shape, which is different from the treatment method of yellow lacquer and plain ground in the flower-themed carved lacquer works of Yongle and Xuande periods. The space between the patterns is made of red lacquer and is full of fine diamond brocade patterns. This kind of practice is rare in the red eliminators of the Yongle period
The layers of lacquer carving in the Yongle period have increased significantly. Some works are as thick as one or two hundred layers, so the patterns fluctuate up and down, and the layers are rich, which enhances the three-dimensional sense. This is the new development of lacquer carving in the Ming Dynasty. During this period, the works with flowers, birds and birds as the theme mostly took blooming flowers as the ground, and pairs of golden pheasants, peacocks and dragon dragons were equal to dancing in the flowers, with romantic artistic conception and a new style. This box has a thick paint layer and a sophisticated knife work. Its decorative style and dragon pattern all have the standard characteristics of Yongle carved paint, representing the highest level of Yongle carved paint in the Ming Dynasty
