This post is a letter from Su Shi to Fan Chun (De Ru). Fan Chunchun is the fourth son of Fan Zhongyan, a famous politician and writer in the Northern Song Dynasty. During the Yuanfeng reign of Emperor Shenzong of the Song Dynasty, a total of five legions sent troops to fight against the Western Xia, including the Huanqing Army led by Gao Zunyu and the Jingyuan Army led by Liu Changzuo. According to the Biography of Fan Chunchun in Volume 314 of the History of the Song Dynasty, in the last years of Yuanfeng in the Northern Song Dynasty, Fan Chunchun had made contributions to the reconciliation of the contradictions between Zunyu and Changzuo, the two routes of the Western Xia army, and the Shenzong promoted him from a Shaanxi transfer judge to a transfer deputy envoy, which is consistent with the official title of Deru in the post, “the Ministry of Transport”. According to this, the writing time of this letter should be the last year of Yuanfeng, that is, the seventh and eighth years of Yuanfeng (1084-1085). Su Shi is about 50 years old. The “second brother” in the post refers to Fan Chunren (Fan Zhongyan’s second son)
The style of this post is natural and smooth, with ingenuity and clumsiness, simple and ancient appearance, and rich and dignified charm. Although there are missing and damaged characters, it is still the best work of Sushi in his middle age.
