[Tao Shanye Buddha]
Tao Shanye Buddha, Tang Dynasty, 17 cm high
The bottom is square and the top is round. The Buddha statue is in a high bun, with one hand for the wish seal and the other for the meditation seal. It is bared on the right shoulder, with backlight and head light. There is a side Bodhisattva on the left and right, with a canopy on the top, seven Buddhas on the left, right and top of the canopy. The Buddha sits on the lotus seat. The statue is wrapped with lotus stems, with balanced composition and aesthetic feeling. The boundary column on the back of the good karma Buddha is printed with 12 characters, three vertical columns and four columns, “The good karma mud of the Tang Dynasty is pressed like a wonderful body”. The font has the characteristics of regular script in the early Tang Dynasty, and should be made during the period from Zhenguan to Yonghui
There are 7 such Buddha of Good karma (good karma mud) in the Palace Museum, all of which are stamped with molds. The printing of Buddha statues with clay was popular in the Tang Dynasty, not only in small temples, but also in famous temples. This production method is simple and easy, and does not require a lot of materials. These Buddhist statues reflect the prosperity of Buddhist statues in the early Tang Dynasty from one side.
