Painted bird ear cup, Western Han Dynasty, height 5.4 cm, caliber 14.5-8 cm, connecting ear width 10.5 cm, bottom diameter 8.5-4.8 cm
This cup was unearthed in the tomb of the Western Han Dynasty, No. 28, Jiangling Gaotai, Jingzhou. The ear cup is made of carved wood, lighter and thinner than the ear cup of the Warring States Period, with oval mouth, deep belly arc wall, flat bottom, short circle foot, crescent-shaped ears, and upturned ear surface. It belongs to the type of round ear cup. The surface of the instrument and the place near the mouth are painted with black paint, the inside is painted with red paint, the inner bottom is painted with a bird in the middle, the bird’s outline, feet and tail are outlined with black lines, the body and wings are painted with yellow-green, the bird’s body is curled, the head and tail are connected, and the slender long tail is upturned. The ear surface and ear side of the ear cup are painted with red paint
This ear cup has a simple and lively composition, realistic design and extremely fine drawing, which is typical of the decorative patterns of Western Han lacquerware.
