Cishan culture pottery is mainly made of red pottery, and there are also a few grayish artifacts, including argillaceous and sand. Grey pottery mostly appeared in the middle of the Neolithic Age, and by the late Neolithic Age, it had become the mainstream product in pottery, especially in the Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties. The formation of grey pottery is due to the fact that the pottery is fired in a weak reducing atmosphere, and the iron oxide in the clay can not be fully oxidized, thus showing the color of ferrous oxide.
