  • Description:
This lapis lazuli sculpture of Arhat Mountain was taken from the “Sixteen True Images of Tang Guanxiu Paintings” collected at Shengyin Temple in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. Qianlong regarded it as a typical group of Arhat statues, renamed and sequenced it, and made cultural relics of various materials based on this motif. This is an example. The sculpture is the 16th Abida, holding a scroll in his right hand and fingers in his left hand. There are cigarettes curling in the incense burner on one side, sitting in a cave near a wutong tree, The rock wall at the upper left is engraved with the praise of the Sixteen True Images of Guan Xiu Painting, which was made by the emperor in the 22nd year of Qianlong’s reign. Surrounded by winding and rugged rocks, ancient pines stand upright behind. The integration of the original Arhat statues into the composition of natural scenery is a typical example of cultural creativity in the Qianlong period.
