Lang Shining (1688-1766 AD), an Italian, is a Catholic Jesuit friar. He studied oil painting and architecture. He came to China at the age of 27 to preach and served the Inner Court with pictures. He served in the Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong dynasties. This is the work of Lang at the age of 58. Sketch three sheep, homophonic “Three Auspicious Beginnings”. The painting method refers to the Chinese and Western paintings. It depicts the gentle and loving ewes and the childish and naive lambs’ expressions and movements, which are very vivid and moving. Lao Mei and Cuizhu, who are set against the background, are free to use the brush and have the freehand brushwork appeal of traditional Chinese painting. They may have been created by other court painters.
