Louis de Poirot (1735-1814) was born in France and moved to Italy. He joined the Jesuit Church in 1756. He came to China in 1770, the 35th year of Qianlong’s reign, and entered Beijing about two years later. He was the last group of missionaries who came to China to preach. At that time, both Lang Shining and Wang Zhicheng had passed away, and they were valued in the Inner Court with Ai Qimeng. Their painting skills were far inferior to Lang Shining’s. In addition to painting, He is also proficient in Manchu and Chinese. The church attaches great importance to him mainly because of his achievements in translating the Bible into Chinese. In the 38th year of Qianlong’s reign (1773), Pope Clement XIV (1705-1774) ordered the dissolution of the Jesuit Church. In 1775, the dissolution order was passed to China, and the He family continued to live in Beijing. In the 16th year of Jiaqing’s reign (1811), he was weak and sickly in his later years. He asked the emperor to return to Europe. Due to the aggravation of his illness, he did not travel and died in Beijing in the 19th year (1814).
