[Hua Yan Han Camel Remaining Snow Map Axis]
Han Camel Remaining Snow Map Axis, Qing Dynasty, Hua Yan painting, paper edition, color setting, 139.7 cm vertically and 58.4 cm horizontally
The title on the top left of this picture is: “The old camel is cold and gnawing at the third watch of the month, and the snow has opened a new wild goose sky. In the Qianlong Bingyin Spring Dynasty, the people of Mount Xinluo wrote a sentence on the pavilion with a clear fragrance and warm green.” The seal of “Hua Yan” and “Qiu Yue” is white. The seal includes: “Yongbao, the son of the Guan family”, “Zhu Wenyin, the treasured book of the Guan family’s Pine and Snow Room”, and “Bai Wenyin, between Cunping and Lanai”
“Bingyin” is the 11th year of Qianlong’s reign (1746) in the Qing Dynasty. The author was 65 years old
The picture depicts the scene of a group of travelers and camels camping on the mountain road on a snowy night when the sky is freezing and the moon is hanging high. The picture is divided by diagonal lines, and the lower right is the main body of the painting, namely, man and camel. At the foot of the snowy mountain, beside the dead trees in the cold forest, a thin bactrian camel is biting the snow with its head down. A person in the tent looks out. The author succinctly drew the circle of the tent with a few strokes; The figure has a high nose, curly hair and thick beard, which looks like people from the Western Regions; The camel is slightly faint after being drawn with the line, the camel bones are slightly exposed, the eyes are wide open, and the expression monograph fully shows the deep skill of Hua Yan in reducing strokes. On the left, the bottom is painted with light ink to show the haze of the snowy night, and a crescent moon and a lone goose are drawn with thick ink. This is in contrast with the residual snow represented by the white space at the bottom. The visual contrast is strong, from which we can see the superb ability of Hua Yan to control the picture and the aesthetic interest of the literati
The painting is similar to Hua Yan’s “Snow on Tianshan Mountain”, and the figures in the two pictures are also slightly similar. Both works are vivid and are representative works of Hua Yan.
